Today I am 45, and reading these letters I can only confirm that the three-week summer camp in Jastrzębia Góra was not a successful travel debut. The reason was simple: I had no peers there—I was the youngest, a lone little wolf 🙂
Camps at that time did not offer as many attractions as they do today. We had two: a sports field and the beach. In football games, I only got in the way of the much older boys, and after witnessing the recovery of a drowned man on the beach, I no longer enjoyed being there. Now you can understand why I cried—and they were certainly not tears of happiness 🙂
However, every cloud has a silver lining. It became obvious that any future trip could only be better.
And it was! I became a scout—a Cub Scout in a green beret with a tassel—and scout camps became a wonderful adventure.
P.S. Many thanks to my dear parents for preserving my correspondence for future generations.
